NHDOT gets 2023 RAISE Grant Award of $20 million for the General Sullivan Bridge Project

Project: General Sullivan Bridge 11238S Status: Design
Scope of Work:

The General Sullivan Bridge (GSB) Superstructure Replacement Project is providing a multi-use path across Little Bay adjacent to the Spaulding Turnpike between the City of Dover, NH and the Town of Newington, NH. The project entails a complete superstructure replacement of the closed General Sullivan Bridge built in 1934 (NHDOT Br No 200/023), this 9-span combination deck truss and partial through arch truss. The bridge is critical to non-motorized travel from the Cities of Dover, Somersworth, and Rochester to the Seacoast Communities of Newington and Portsmouth.

The GSB was closed in 2018 when two floorbeams were determined uncapable of carrying pedestrian loading. The 9-span combination deck truss and partial through arch truss superstructure will be replaced with a new 2-steel girder superstructure that was selected after an extensive Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement that received a Supplemental Record of Decision on February 17, 2022.
